What To Do in a Car Accident
Even the best drivers may be in a car accident. Should that happen, it always pays to be prepared. Being in an accident is stressful, and it's hard for many people to think clearly and remember what to do.
So, in addition to keeping a first aid kit, flares, and a disposable camera in your car, print out the steps below and keep them in your glove compartment.
Here's what to do in a car accident:
- Stay calm.
- Stop your car. Do not leave the scene of an accident.
- Move your car. If it is safe, move your vehicle to the side of the road, out of traffic. If your vehicle cannot be driven, turn on your hazard lights or use cones, warning triangles or flares.
- Call 911, no matter how minor the accident. The police will fill out an accident report. If anyone is hurt, do not try to move an injured person—you may aggravate the injuries!
- Always exchange:
• Names
• Addresses
• Phone numbers
• Names of insurance companies
• Insurance information
• Drivers license numbers
• Car license plate numbers
- Do not admit guilt. Do not sign anything assigning fault or promise to pay for damage.
- Obtain the names, addresses, and telephone numbers of passengers and witnesses.
- Make records. Jot down specific details about the scene of the accident and take pictures of the damage.
- Report the accident. As soon as possible after the accident, report the accident to your broker, agent, or insurance company.
