If you are under 16 you must take a DOR-approved drivers education course. If you are under 18, you must also complete 50 hours (10 at night) of supervised driving practice with a driver who is at least 21 years old.
16 or Older:
Drivers education is not mandatory in Kansas if you are 16 or older. However, it’s always a good idea for new drivers to take a Kansas drivers education course. With quality drivers education, you can:
  • Learn the rules of the road and essential safe driving skills
  • Have a better chance of passing your learners permit test
  • Qualify for an auto insurance discount (where applicable)
Supervised Driving Practice
If you are under 18, you must hold your instruction permit for at least 6 months and you must also complete 50 hours (10 at night) of supervised driving practice with a driver who is at least 21 years old.
4. Take the driving test for the Kansas drivers license
Be at least 15 years old.
Present acceptable proof of identity.
Have held a valid instruction permit for a minimum of 6 months (if under 16).
Have met these supervised driving requirements:

If under 16, you must have completed at least 25 hours of supervised driving while accompanied by an adult, 21 years of age or older, 10 of those hours at night. An additional 25 hours is required prior to age 16. In other words, prior to age 16, you must provide an affidavit showing at least 50 hours (10 at night) of practice driving supervised by a licensed driver at least 21 years old. If this affidavit is not provided prior to age 16, the driver will remain restricted until age 17 or until affidavit is provided, whichever occurs first.

If you are between 16 and 18, you must submit an affidavit showing at least 50 hours (10 at night) of practice driving supervised by a driver who is at least 21 years old.
Present a Drivers Education Completion Slip (if under 16).
Provide your own vehicle with evidence of liability insurance. The vehicle must be representative of the class of license for which you are applying.
Pay any applicable fee.
Pass the driving test.
Upon passing the driving test, you will be issued a Restricted Drivers License if you are younger than 16 years. With the Restricted License, you may drive only:
To and from school.
To, from or in connection with any employment or farm related work.
Or at any time when accompanied by a licensed adult driver 18 years of age or older.
You are eligible for an unrestricted license at age 16. To get an Unrestricted Drivers License, the applicant must provide affidavit showing at least 50 hours of adult supervised driving, with 10 of those hours being at night, by a licensed driver at least 21 years old.
NOTE: Any person under the age of 16 with a restricted license that is convicted of two or more moving violations will remain restricted until age 17.
