If you've searched "Florida drivers ed" and landed on three different course names, you're not losing your mind. Florida changed its rules in 2025, and the course you need now depends entirely on your age. Get the wrong one, and you'll waste time and money on a course that won't even count.
Here's the good news: once you know your age bracket, the rest is a straight line. Let's get you on the right path.
Under 18? You need the DETS course, 6 hours, online.
18 or older? You need the TLSAE course, 4 hours, online.
That's the whole split. Everything else below just walks you through what happens after you finish your course.
As of August 1, 2025Education Courses Driver Improvement Schools Driver Education Traffic Safety Dets Driver Licenses Id Cards, Florida requires every first-time driver under 18 to complete the Driver Education Traffic Safety (DETS) course before applying for a learner's license. It's 6 hours, fully online, and covers defensive driving, hazard recognition, and the effects of drugs and alcohol on driving. It replaced the old 4-hour TLSAE course for teens.
You can start DETS at 14 and a half, even though you can't apply for your permit until you turn 15. Finishing early means you're ready to go the day you hit the minimum age. Our Florida DETS and permit test comboFlorida Combo Driversed.com lets you knock out both requirements in one place.
If you already completed TLSAE before August 1, 2025, that certificate still counts, but only for one year from your completion date. Miss that window and you'll need to take DETS instead. This is a 50-question test on Florida traffic laws and road signs. You need 80% to pass, that's 40 questions right. Our free Florida practice permit testFlorida Practice Permit Test Driversed.com covers the same material you'll see on exam day.
Here's a real advantage for teens: if you're 15 to 17, you can take this exam online from home instead of driving to the DMV. The catch is that a parent or guardian has to proctor it and sign a form confirming they were present. That form needs to be notarized or signed in front of a license examiner. Skip that step and your application gets rejected at the counter.
Once you've passed both the course and the exam, head to a Florida DMV or tax collector's officeDmv Florida Driversed.com with:
You'll also pass a vision and hearing test on-site. Once you're approved, you've got your learner's licenseFlorida Learners Permit Driversed.com, and a set of rules that come with it:
Florida requires 50 hours of supervised driving before you can move up to a full license, and 10 of those hours have to be after dark. A parent or guardian certifies these hours using the Certification of Minor Driving Experience form. Start logging as soon as you get your permit so you're not scrambling later.
You need to hold your learner's license for 12 months with a clean record before you're eligible for the road test. One moving violation is okay if adjudication was withheld, but anything more resets that clock. Pass the Class E driving skills test, and you'll get your full Class E license.
One thing worth knowing before you celebrate: the curfew doesn't disappear when you pass your road test. Until you turn 18, 16-year-old license holders can't drive between 11 p.m. and 6 a.m., and 17-year-olds can't drive between 1 a.m. and 5 a.m. Both curfews have the same exceptions, driving to or from work, or riding with a licensed adult 21 or older. Once you turn 18, every GDL restriction lifts automatically.
If you're 18 or older and this is your first Florida license, you'll take the 4-hour Traffic Law and Substance Abuse Education (TLSAE) courseEducation Courses Driver Improvement Schools Traffic Law Substance Abuse Education Tlsae Find Approved Listing Tlsae Course Providers Driver Licenses Id Cards instead of DETS. It's 100% online, self-paced, and your completion gets reported straight to the DMV. Our Florida TLSAE courseFlorida Drug And Alcohol Driversed.com covers everything you need in one sitting.
Unlike teens, adults don't get the online testing option. You'll take the 50-question knowledge exam in person at a licensing office. Same 80% passing score applies.
Florida doesn't require adults to log supervised hours. If you're new behind the wheel though, practicing with a licensed driver before your test is one of the best ways to walk in confident instead of nervous.
Once you're ready, schedule your driving test. Pass it, and you walk out with a full Class E license. No permit holding period, no curfews, no waiting around.
